New Zealand's Government Advises Clampdown On Alcohol Ads, Sponsorships

Steinlager's long-standing sponsorship of the All Blacks "would likely end if recommendations to the government on alcohol advertising and sponsorship in sport are implemented," according to Ben Heather of STUFF. A government-appointed expert forum "has advised a heavy clampdown on alcohol advertising and sponsorship in sport and youth-focused events." It said, "We believe that the current level of exposure of young people to alcohol advertising and sponsorship is unacceptable and that this exposure can be reduced." But the government "has already dampened hopes for reform, saying more work is needed before it can act on any of the recommendations." Recommendations included "banning alcohol advertising and sponsorship during live sporting events." Sponsorship of any sporting team or venue "would be banned and replaced with an alternative funding programme." The hours at which alcohol advertising "could air would be restricted to protect youths" (STUFF, 12/17).
