SPFL Withholds Scottish Championship Side Rangers' Broadcast Money To Cover EBT Fine

The Scottish Professional Football League is withholding £250,000 ($389,495) of broadcast money due to Scottish Championship side Rangers in “a bid to recoup a fine imposed for the club's use of a controversial tax scheme,” according to the BBC. Nimmo Smith imposed the fine in Feb. ‘13 after finding Rangers “broke league rules” in its use of an employee benefit trust scheme. Rangers said it will appeal against the SPFL decision "vigorously." It argues that the “company in breach of the rules is being liquidated.” However, Rangers' directors reportedly approached the SPFL board in the past few months to discuss “payment terms relating to the fine” (BBC, 12/17). In Glasgow, Gary Ralston reported league bosses have “hit back and claimed” the Ibrox board has gone back on its word to “pay for the sins of the previous club owners.” The SPFL has told the new company running the club it is liable for the fine “handed down to the oldco.” A commission established by the Scottish Premier League handed out the punishment after the club “failed to disclose dozens of payments under the controversial tax avoidance scheme.” However, the commission decided Rangers had “gained no sporting advantage and stopped short of stripping the club” of titles (DAILY RECORD, 12/17).
