Event Notes: Morocco To Host FIFA Club World Cup For Second Consecutive Year

Morocco "will host the 11th FIFA Club World Cup for the second consecutive year," a tournament which is held annually and features the champion clubs of each continent. The tournament, starting on Wednesday, "will feature five clubs who have never appeared in the competition before." San Lorenzo (South America), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Western Sydney Wanderers (Asia), ES Setif (Africa) and Moghreb Tetouan (Host country) are the newcomers which will join the returning Real Madrid and Auckland City in the quest to succeed Bayern Munich as the champions (XINHUA, 12/9). ... The Int'l Cycling Federation (UCI) and Rio 2016 Organizing Committee have confirmed the Rio 2016 Olympic Road Race course for men and women. The course, which is 256.4km long for men (Saturday, Aug. 6) and 130.3km for women (Sunday, Aug. 7) will start and finish in Flamengo Park; pass through Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra and Reserva Beach; and include a long coastal section at Reserva Beach and Barra (UCI). ... The French region of Alsace on Monday "urged the French Motorsport Federation (FFSA) to 'make its position known' on the possibility of organizing the 2015 Rally France in the region despite the announced withdrawal of some sponsors." The general councils of French departments Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin, both within the Alsace Region, announced Friday that they "do not wish to assist in the financing of the event" which has taken place every year since '10 "thanks to the support of its communities." The regional council “confirmed [its] renewed commitment to the FFSA” but declined to increase its contribution (which was €460,000 in ‘14), citing “financial constraints which have never been stronger on local authorities.” The council also suggested the rally organizers reconsider their economic model “by involving more private funding” (AFP, 12/8).
