Mexican Airlines Reporting Spike In Demand Ahead Of Two-Leg Liga MX Final

The "celebration" of the finals of the current Liga MX season -- Tigres UANL and América will play the first leg on Thursday in Monterrey and the second in Sunday in Mexico City -- "will be reflected not only by full stadiums, but with national airlines operating flights from Monterrey to Mexico City reporting more than 90% of tickets sold," according to Roberto Valadez of LA AFICION. Aeroméxico announced that its flights from Thursday night until Monday morning "have an occupancy of nearly 100%." For its part, low-cost airline VivaAerobus reported 90% occupancy from Thursday through Monday on its Monterrey-Mexico City flights. Due to the high demand, VivaAerobus will add one Mexico City-Monterrey and one Monterrey-Mexico City flight on Saturday, "and will do the same on Sunday." Other airlines "registering increased occupancy on their flights include Interjet and Volaris" (LA AFICION, 12/9). In Mexico City, Gerardo Suárez reported Tigres fans "want to paint Mexico City's Estadio Azteca blue and yellow, and this is why in a matter of hours demand for flights to Mexico City increased considerably, causing prices to shoot up." For Aeroméxico's flights, flying from Monterrey to Mexico City cost 1,800 pesos ($125) on Sunday, and after Tigres made the finals, "it took two hours for ticket prices to double." At noon on Monday, those round-trip flights cost more than 5,000 pesos ($348). One of the "clearest cases is with Volaris." For a flight leaving Monterrey on Sunday at 7am local time and returning on Monday at 4:30am, it will cost 6,550 pesos ($455) (LA AFICION, 12/8).
