Argentine First Division Side River Plate Reaping Rewards Of On-Field Success

Argentine first division side River Plate's "athletic success has created a furor for the club's funds," according to Daniel Avellaneda of CLARIN. For the Superclásico against Boca alone, fans spent 20M Argentine pesos ($2.3M) on tickets -- "a mark for the Guinness world record book." And the prize if River beats Colombian side Atlético Nacional for the Copa Sudamericana -- the first leg of the final ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday -- is $1.2M. This is "in addition to" the $1.03M the club has earned so far in the continental tournament. There is, "however, a dark side, far from these spectacular sums." It is the club's total debt, which has increased to 654M Argentine pesos ($76.6M) as of Aug. 31, River announced at a shareholders meeting. At "first glance, these are disappointing." Nonetheless, "club directors do not see them as negative once scrutinized." River Treasurer Andrés Ballotta explained that the recent increase in the club's debt "has to do with losses generated during former President Daniel Passarella's tenure" (CLARIN, 12/7).
