Liverpool Owner Fenway Sports Group Delivers On Anfield Stadium Dilemma

Fenway Sports Group deserves credit "for bringing an end to such a damaging saga," according to James Pearce of the LIVERPOOL ECHO. Work "will finally get underway at Anfield on Monday." Construction company Carillion "will take control of the site" as the £114M ($178M) project to transform the Main Stand begins. For owners Fenway Sports Group, it is "the solution to the biggest issue they inherited when they completed their dramatic takeover in the High Court in October 2010." From the moment FSG bought Liverpool "there was pressure on them to bring the saga to a swift conclusion." However, Principal Owner John W. Henry and Chair Tom Werner "refused to be rushed." Exhaustive feasibility studies "were carried out on the merits and pitfalls of building a new stadium and refurbishing Anfield." The latter "always looked the most likely outcome." Henry admitted in '11 that the preferred option of redevelopment had run into trouble because there were “so many obstacles.” But with the support of residents, Liverpool City Council and Your Housing Group "they have made it work." The finance "is being provided by an interest free loan from FSG’s cash reserves" -- meaning redevelopment will be "no drain on the club’s resources." A bigger, better Anfield "is on the way." Liverpool’s owners "deserve credit for delivering where those who went before them so miserably failed" (LIVERPOOL ECHO, 12/6).
