Former Taiwanese Major League Baseball player TSAO CHIN-HUI has signed to play for the Adelaide Bite in Australian Major League (ABL) tournaments, "marking his return to formal games in which he has not played for five years" (CNA, 12/3). ... Bayern Munich defender JEROME BOATENG has said it would be a "huge honour" to "one day lead Germany out as the first black captain of the World Cup holders." When PHILIPP LAHM retired after winning the World Cup in July, BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER succeeded him as Germany skipper, but Boateng said that he "wants to lead out the world champions in the future." Boateng: "I had it briefly on my arm during an international, but it would be something completely different to be allowed to lead the team onto the pitch" (AFP, 12/3). ... Liverpool striker MARIO BALOTELLI is "ready to fight" any FA racism charge over his "inflammatory post on social media about black people and Jews after being ordered to explain the latest bizarre chapter in his controversial career." Balotelli claimed that posting an image of "computer-game namesake Super Mario" which included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew" was "actually a botched attempt to convey an anti-racism message" using "humour." He was "not prepared to accept being accused of anything other than an embarrassing failure to make clear his true intent" (London TELEGRAPH, 12/2). ... Former Brazilian forward RIVALDO has placed an advertisement on Instagram as he "searches for new investors for the club he is president of." The 2002 World Cup winner became Mogi Mirim Esporte Club's president in '08 while he was still playing in Europe (London GUARDIAN, 12/3). ... ZINEDINE ZIDANE has been among the voices calling on THIERRY HENRY to make a "final France appearance as it was announced Tuesday that the country's national team will host Brazil in March." Zidane: "For everything he has brought to French football, it would be a great moment for him. And the opponents would bring him back some good memories" (XINHUA, 12/2). ... Former Ligue 1 side Bordeaux coach FRANCIS GILLOT will be the new coach for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua. Gillot will be "accompanied by his two loyal assistants, RENÉ LOBELLO and ALAIN BÉNÉDET, both of whom he has worked with for nearly seven years." The Shanghai club is expected to make this information official Thursday (20 MINUTES, 12/3). ... The President of the Montpellier Criminal Court imposed a "three-month imprisonment suspended sentence" for French volleyball player EARVIN NGAPETH for "participating in a brawl at a nightclub" in August ’12. Ngapeth has the right to appeal (LES ECHOS, 12/2).
