Atlético Madrid Expels 'Frente Atlético' Ultras Group From Vicente Calderón Stadium

Atlético Madrid has announced the expulsion of the "Frente Atlético" ultras group from the Vicente Calderón stadium after a "number of members of the fans association participated in Sunday's mass brawl, which resulted in one death and eleven injured," according to MARCA. Atlético said in a statement, "As a result of the extremely serious incidents, the club created a special commission with the aim of fact finding and taking relevant action. This decision was taken when we received the police report identifying those arrested and involved in the mass brawl as being members of the 'Frente Atlético.'" The commission "obtained information from the Police and checked the names of the people who had been detained for having participated, 'either directly or indirectly,' in the mass brawl before the game" (MARCA, 12/2). The EFE reported in a separate piece Deportivo La Coruña decided that the Riazor Blues ultras group's section at its stadium will be "symbolically shut during the side's next two games which are coincidentally both against Málaga" -- on Wednesday "for a cup match and on Saturday for a league fixture." Deportivo President Tino Fernández announced the measure in a press conference at the stadium, where he "read out a statement and took no questions on the matter." He also revealed that the club will "sell tickets for Saturday's game at one euro so that the Riazor becomes 'a packed manifestation of exemplary sporting and social spirit'" (EFE, 12/2).
