F1 Administrator Says Caterham Can Compete In '15 With Same Car If Buyer Is Found

Caterham F1 Administrator Finbarr O’Connell said the team will be allowed to compete in F1 next season with this year's car if they “find a buyer to keep them in business,” according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS. O'Connell said the FIA had "agreed the dispensation at a meeting last week" of the F1 commission. The move “still needs to be ratified” by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Doha on Wednesday. O’Connell: "It was proposed as something to help Caterham and Marussia but will be available to any team if they want to apply to the FIA.” While Caterham is hoping to find a new owner, Marussia has “ceased trading and their assets are due to be auctioned off” later this month (REUTERS, 12/1). The PA reported for a potential purchaser it now means there is “no pressure to build a car” for ‘15, particularly as “time is of the essence, and all the inherent costs” that would apply. O’Connell said, “That is of interest to all the parties I’m talking to because it gives them a choice, an easier start to get into F1 if they chose that route. It helps.” The F1 Commission’s decision has now taken some of the burden off of O’Connell to conclude a sale prior to the festive season. O’Connell: “Before Christmas would still be ideal. … It now doesn’t have to happen by then, but the earlier the better from my point of view, and I’m encouraging people as much as I can” (PA, 12/1).
