China's national swimming federation “rallied behind double Olympic champion” SUN YANG, defending the "outstanding athlete" one day after it was revealed that he served a three-month doping ban earlier this year (CHANNEL NEWS ASIA, 11/25). ... Arsenal manager ARSENE WENGER has hit back at Arsenal shareholder ALISHER USMANOV, taking time to address the criticism from Usmanov. Wenger: "Everybody has the right to have an opinion. Having said that, we have values at this club. The first one is when we go through a difficult patch, we show solidarity. That is a very important one. The second one is that, when you have something to say to each other, we say it face to face. We don't need to go to the newspapers” (London EXPRESS, 11/25). ... Portuguese coach ARTUR JORGE signed an 18-month contract with Algerian football club MC Alger, which "also received applications from French coaches CLAUDE LE ROY, ROGER LEMERRE, and JEAN FERNANDEZ." Ligue 1 side Metz announced Monday, through its official website, the contact extension of French footballer GAËTAN BUSSMANN for two seasons. The 23-year-old left back is “now tied with the Garnets” until June ’17 (L’EQUIPE, 11/24). Canadian tennis star EUGENIE BOUCHARD has "parted ways with longtime coach" NICK SAVIANO. Saviano, who has coached Bouchard for the last eight years, gave no reason for the split. He said, “Genie and I have decided that it is best for us to end our player-coach relationship and to move in different directions for 2015” (TORONTO STAR, 11/25). ... An “obscure 22-year-old French tennis player and official,” MORGAN LAMRI, has been banned for life for gambling and match-fixing. The Tennis Integrity Unit, based in London, on Monday cited only Lamri’s role as an “official” when announcing he had been “banned from the sport for life after being found guilty of multiple offences.” They would “not say where or when” the offenses occurred (London GUARDIAN, 11/25). ... Concerns “continue to mount” over the health of PELE, who was admitted to hospital for a second time in a month. The 74-year-old is said to have contracted a urinary infection after undergoing surgery to remove kidney stones at the start of November (London INDEPENDENT, 11/25). ... Football Association of Ireland CEO JOHN DELANEY has apologized after “being caught on camera singing an Irish Republican song in a Dublin bar.” Delaney was videoed giving a rendition of a song about Belfast man JOE MCDONNELL, who was one of the IRA hunger strikers who died in ‘81. Delaney said, "If the song offends anyone of course I'm sorry” (BBC, 11/25).

CRITICAL CONDITION: Australian cricketer PHIL HUGHES remains in a critical condition in hospital on Wednesday morning after a short-pitched delivery struck his skull during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Hughes, who was playing for South Australia against his old state NSW, was “felled by the bouncer from fast bowler SEAN ABBOTT” at 2:23pm Tuesday. The ball struck him on the left side of his head, behind his ear. Hughes collapsed just seconds after he was struck in the head by the cricket ball. The 25-year-old “put his hands on his knees, looked towards his feet, and collapsed face-first” onto the SCG pitch. He immediately underwent surgery after arriving at St. Vincent's Hospital, with doctors working to relieve pressure to his brain (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 11/26).
