Qatar Reveals Third 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadium Design

Designs for the third stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar "have been revealed," according to Laura Mark of ARCHITECTS JOURNAL. The scheme designed by multinational consultancy Dar Al-Handasah, which has a base in London and includes U.S. architects Perkins+Will among its group members, "will revamp Doha’s existing Khalifa International Stadium to create a 40,000-seat venue." As part of the plans, a new building "will be added to the east and a roof will be built to cover the whole seating area." The scheme "also includes a new sports museum, food courts, shops, and a health centre." This "is the third of Qatar’s five planned World Cup Stadium’s to be revealed." Zaha Hadid "has been commissioned to design a 40,000-seat stadium at Al-Wakrah and Dar Al-Handasah is working on another 60,000-seat venue at Al Khor City" (ARCHITECTS JOURNAL, 11/25). EUROSPORT reported organizers released a video of the Khalifa International Stadium that shows "their ambition and enthusiasm for the project remains undimmed." Qatar World Cup Organizing Committee Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi said, "It demonstrates our determination and firm commitment to deliver on an amazing tournament." Plans listed one "striking" detail: "Innovative cooling technology to ensure an optimal playing temperature of 26 degrees celsius." In other words, "this is the air-conditioned stadium as originally promised, but which was later written off as impossible"  (EUROSPORT, 11/25).
