AFL Ticketing Shake-Up Could See Empty Seats, Member Tickets Resold

Fans "would be able to buy tickets usually reserved for members and empty seats at high-demand matches in a shake-up" being considered by the Australian Football League, according to Peter Rolfe of the HERALD SUN. A secondary ticket marketplace "is being explored by the AFL that would allow club members to sell their reserved seats." The ticket resale model "could give ordinary fans access to sold-out games, put money back in the pockets of members unable to attend matches and boost the coffers of clubs." AFL Commercial Operations General Darren Birch said that "the system could benefit all fans and enhance the spectator experience by filling empty seats." He said, “Members being able to legitimately and safely sell their tickets would be of great benefit. Both the seller and buyer would know it was an authentic ticket and that someone would be able to go to the game." “No-show’’ tickets could also be sold under the plan, "aimed at boosting crowd numbers and atmosphere and giving fans greater access to prime seats for blockbuster matches such as Anzac Day" (HERALD SUN, 11/24).
