Argentine FA's New Format, Schedule Acquire Cabinet Chief Capitanich's Approval

Argentine FA President Luis Segura confirmed that next year, "a transition tournament will be held from February to June and later, in August, the long season that will run until June of '16 will begin," according to LA VOZ. Segura said, "We agreed unanimously to propose to Fútbol Para Todos the need for a short tournament in the first semester and a longer one starting in August, which will coincide with the European break and allow us to sell players and increase the market." Segura also "explained how the number of first division teams will be steadily reduced." He said, "There will be gradual relegation until we reach 20 teams and averages will be maintained. We have to analyze promotion and relegation in the B Nacional. We have to discuss this with Fútbol Para Todos" (LA VOZ, 11/18). LA NACION reported the partners -- the AFA and the Argentine government -- "reached an agreement." Argentina Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich and Segura agreed that the proposed format "will go forward." The government "expressed no significant objection, as expected." Starting in June '16, "the most likely scenario" for promotion and relegation is that four clubs will be dropped and two will be promoted. This "will mean the first division will lose two teams, and gradually return to 20, or at the most, 22." Segura needed the "approval from Capitanich, the primary partner, whom he had originally promised a long championship from February to December" (LA NACION, 11/20).
