Munich To Invest $94M Upgrading, Renovating City's Olympic Stadium

Munich will invest €76M ($94M) "to upgrade and modernize the city's Olympic Stadium," according to Florian Zick of ABENDZEITUNG. The stadium "will continue to be used for concerts and public viewing events." Over the next several weeks, the city council "will decide how to modernize the stadium," which hosted the 1972 Summer Games. The city, together with operating company Olympiapark München, "has come up with three options." The first "calls for turning the stadium into a museum" and would have a price tag of €15M ($19M). A standard renovation of the stadium, so it would be able to continue hosting concerts and other large events, would require a minimum investment of €42M ($52M). And a complete overhaul and upgrade of the stadium would cost €76M. The city council "is currently in favor of a complete renovation." Council member Josef Schmid said, "We can't allow the Olympic Stadium to become a museum." The renovation of the stadium's tent roof, which is under monumental protection, "would cost an additional" €76M ($95M), which would take the stadium's complete overhaul to more than €150M ($187M) (ABENDZEITUNG, 11/10).
