Architect Arata Isozaki Rips Tokyo 2020 Olympics Stadium, Calling It 'Dull'

Japanese architect Arata Isozaki said that Zaha Hadid Architects' redesigned Tokyo 2020 Olympics stadium scheme will be "dull and look like a turtle," according to Merlin Fulcher of ARCHITECTS JOURNAL. Isozaki has warned the "latest, scaled-down vision" for the Games' centerpiece could be a "monumental mistake" and a "disgrace to future generations." The 80,000-capacity stadium project has been "mired in controversy ever since Hadid defeated a raft of international stars to win the job two years ago" (ARCHITECTS JOURNAL, 11/6). In Tokyo, Tomohiro Osaki reported Isozaki, who has "designed Olympic venues himself in the past," said, "The sight left me in despair. If the stadium gets built the way it is, Tokyo will surely be burdened with a gigantic white elephant." He said the architect "originally tasked with the project, Zaha Hadid, should be commissioned to redesign the facility altogether." Isozaki said after seeing the design at the gallery, "I got the impression that the revised proposal was made as a result of a lot of pressure from various sides in Japan, and it doesn’t fully reflect Zaha’s talent, but rather, it has ruined it" (JAPAN TIMES, 11/6).
