National Rugby League Paid $70,700 Of Paul Gallen's ASADA Legal Fees

National Rugby League side Cronulla captain Paul Gallen was given nearly A$80,000 ($70,700) by the NRL "to cover his legal fees while under investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, receiving significantly more assistance from League Central than any other past or present Cronulla player," according to Chris Barrett of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. In a revelation "that undermines his claims of a lack of support from the NRL, and his subsequent protest" at a proposed A$50,000 fine and suspension from Test football, Gallen "was the recipient of special treatment" from NRL CEO Dave Smith's administration after his defection from the lawyers appointed by the Rugby League Players Association to represent Sharks players. The NRL "committed to pay" more than A$350,000 to the 17 past and present Cronulla players. Gallen received almost A$80,000 of that figure -- or 23% "of the total legal relief fund." Gallen "declined to comment" (SMH, 10/30). In Sydney, Ritchie & Rothfield wrote NSW State of Origin players are "banding together to protest the treatment" of Gallen. Players "are contacting each other to garner support for Gallen." Some players "have spoken about taking action to support their skipper." One suggestion was that "they consider boycotting an event next year before Origin" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 10/31).
