Nigeria Faces FIFA Suspension, Risks Place At 2015 African Nations Cup Finals

Nigeria faces another suspension from FIFA "that would not be lifted until May, putting the country out of the running for a place at 2015 African Nations Cup finals," according to Nick Said of REUTERS. The Jos High Court ruled last Thursday that "the Nigeria Football Federation elections on Sept. 30 that elected Amaju Pinnick president be declared null and void, throwing the country’s football back into crisis." After Nigeria was twice suspended this year for government interference in the NFF, FIFA "confirmed in a letter to the NFF in the lead-up to their latest elections that more meddling would bring about an automatic suspension to run at least until FIFA’s elective congress in May" (REUTERS, 10/27). The DAILY POST's Ifreke Inyang wrote Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou told Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Tammy Danagogo that "the football world is tired of the country’s constant upheaval in football administration." Hayatou said, "I had to plead passionately with FIFA President, Mr. Sepp Blatter not to take action on Nigeria on Friday, because Nigeria was in the final of the African Women Championship and a ban on your country would have been bad for the competition and our sponsors. We all heard the news of the court ruling on Thursday, and the football world is angry with Nigeria. That is the truth." Hayatou added that a FIFA ban "was imminent if football matters were not withdrawn from civil courts" (DAILY POST, 10/27).
