Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver Rejects Suggestion That Game Is A 'Complete Mess'

Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver has "accepted responsibility for the sad state of affairs in Australian rugby, but rejected a suggestion the game was in a 'complete mess,'" according to Bret Harris of THE AUSTRALIAN. The Wallabies have won "only two of their last seven Tests and crowds are starting to dwindle." Pulver: "I'm accountable for Australian rugby. I accept that totally. As the chief executive I'm clearly accountable." Pulver described a suggestion that Australian rugby was in a "complete mess" as an exaggeration. Pulver: "Literally five weeks ago the Wallabies had won seven games in a row." There was speculation about Pulver's "relationship with Michael Cheika prior to his appointment as Wallabies coach" on Wednesday. Cheika admitted he had had "run-ins with the ARU over various issues concerning his NSW Waratahs team, but had no personal issue with Pulver." Cheika: "I'm not afraid to admit I've had a rumble in here with guys around contracts and trying to get stuff sorted" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/23).
