West Indies Cricket Board Seeks Meeting With BCCI Following India Series Pullout

In its bid to repair the damages caused by the West Indies team's sudden pullout of the India series, an "embarrassed" West Indies Cricket Board "has sought a meeting" with the Board of Control for Cricket in India and expressed sorrow for the "unfortunate turn of events," according to the PTI. Following an eight-hour emergency meeting on Tuesday, the WICB issued a statement saying it was "deeply embarrassed" and a taskforce of "critical stakeholders" would be established to review the premature end of the Indian tour. The WICB said in a statement, "WICB believes that a way can be found to repair the damage that has been caused and to ensure that similar events do not recur, with the focus being on the betterment of West Indies and world cricket" (PTI, 10/22). The AFP reported the BCCI, one of the richest bodies in world cricket, said earlier on Tuesday that it would "initiate legal proceedings" against the West Indies. Fighting a costly legal action "is not something the WICB can afford while, given India's tours generate huge sponsorship money for the host nation due to the country's large cricket-viewing population, cancellation of the February-March fixtures threatens to be financially devastating for Caribbean cricket." Officials "will also hold an urgent debriefing with the West Indies management in India" (AFP, 10/22). REUTERS' Julian Linden wrote the Int'l Cricket Council "expressed its concern about the dispute between the Indian and West Indian cricket boards but says it is powerless to intervene." The ICC "released a statement on Wednesday saying it was closely following the case and would discuss the dispute next month but did not have the authority to take action." The ICC said, "The ICC hopes that the matter will be resolved amicably, but clarified that, unless the matter is otherwise referred to it, it does not have the power to intervene in disputes resulting from a bilateral FTP tour" (REUTERS, 10/22).
