Germany's Curling Federation Expected To Lose Government Support Due To Funding Gap

The German Curling Federation (DCV) "has reportedly lost its government funding amid a review over financial support of the country's winter sports federations," according to T-ONLINE. It "will the first time in the country's history that an Olympic sports federation loses its government funding." DCV President Dieter Kolb: "It's dramatic. A complete sport will be put on the scrap heap." The decision is expected to take effect on Jan. 1. The funding cut for curling "could be the first of many as it seems more and more likely that government support will be focused on more successful sports." The reason behind the decision is the "smoldering dispute" between the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) and Germany's Interior Ministry (BMI) regarding government funding. A funding gap of around €350,000 ($443,000) reportedly sealed the fate of the DCV. Kolb: "Because the BMI is not willing to increase its funding, the DCV will be taken out of the government funding program, to close this gap" (T-ONLINE, 10/21).
