Football Notes: French Football League To Investigate Incident At Nice Vs. Bastia Match

The disciplinary committee of the French Football League (LFP) "will look into the untoward incident" that marred the end of Saturday's Ligue 1 Nice vs. Bastia game, with local fans "looking to clash with the Corsican club's players."  LFP President Frederic Thiriez said, "I have asked the (match) delegates for a report and the disciplinary committee will review the matter on Thursday." After Bastia won the match 1-0, dozens of Nice fans "invaded the pitch looking to clash with Bastia players who were eventually escorted by police back to the dressing room" (REUTERS, 10/19). ... Cruyff Football "signed a three-year agreement" with Canadian football club FC Regina to support youth football development. Under the new partnership, coaches from Cruyff Football, a Barcelona-based organization founded by former Dutch player John Cruyff and dedicated to training young football players, "will work with Regina to implement a youth academy programme" (SOCCEREX, 10/17). ... Former Cardiff City Manager Malky Mackay appears "unlikely to face any charge of misconduct" from the FA as the investigation into Mackay and former head of recruitment Iain Moody "nears its conclusion." The evidence against the pair "needs to be reviewed again" but the likelihood is that, although there was an "appetite within the FA" to pursue both Mackay and Moody for alleged “sexist, racist and homophobic” text messages, the organization has struggled to overcome its "apparent policy of not acting over private correspondence" (TELEGRAPH, 10/18). ... In response to the comments from French Secretary of State of Sports Thierry Braillard, who affirmed that it was "more than time to touch upon the possible professionalization" of French referees, the French Union of Elite Football Referees (SAFE) "jumped at the opportunity to say that the Secretary of State of Sports must get past the phase of promises and move to action." SAFE released a statement Sunday saying “The Union of Elite Football Referees joins Mr. Braillard in his questioning. SAFE has taken action over several years so our status may indeed be delivered to a level more in line with the high-level requirements that professional football refereeing demands. At this time, SAFE confirms its full cooperation in advancing this subject, as much on the professionalization as social protection or even the recognition of high-level sport status. Armed with the openness for dialogue, SAFE believes that the discussions led by the Secretary of State of Sports for a legislative evolution of a high-level sport status are an excellent working base” (SO FOOT, 10/19).
