Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Begins Asian Tour In Search Of Financial Assistance

Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil traveled to India to attend an Indian Super League inauguration ceremony and ISL side Atlético Kolkata's game against Mumbai City on Sunday, according to A.R. Barbero of MARCA. Gil said of Atlético Kolkata in April, "Together with our local partners and IMG-Reliance, our desire is to drive significant change in football in this country." He will also make "a series of stops before returning to Madrid." Atlético Madrid's "biggest concern remains the search for sources of financing that will allow the club to maintain its level of competitiveness." Gil was expected to be in Hong Kong on Monday and Beijing on Tuesday. The stop in the Chinese capital "could allow for an advance in a reported agreement in which Chinese millionaire Wang Jianlin would inject capital into the club." Under the possible deal, he would acquire 20% of the club and "participate in the management, per an agreement the club will announce at its time." Gil will "finish his trip by passing through Istanbul before returning to Madrid." Naming rights for the club's new stadium "is another topic that has been on the table for some time, and a new meeting is scheduled with Turkish Airlines" (MARCA, 10/12). LIBERTAD DIGITAL reported Atlético Madrid "urgently needs capital." Because of this, Gil and Atlético President Enrique Cerezo "have launched a search for financing." Jianlin, who owns commercial property developer Dalian Wanda Group, "has appeared in the club's path." His company recently acquired the Edificio España in Madrid and "the company's projects include a major luxury complex outside the city." Jianlin's investments have brought him to "focus on Atlético and he could have the beginning of an agreement" to invest €50M ($63M) in the club. The operation would "feature a capital increase in which he would take control of 20% of the club" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 10/13).
