La Liga's Minimum Annual Salary At $163,000, More Than 14 Times National Rate

Every player in La Liga will earn "at least" €129,000 ($163,000), "more than 14 times the current national minimum wage" -- €9,034 ($11,400) a year -- in Spain, according to MARCA. Spanish second division players must be paid at least €64,500 ($81,400). These figures were revealed in the latest edition of the Official Spanish State Gazette (BOE), which "confirms the approval of the new collective agreement governing professional football and notes that these minimums are expected to rise next season in line with the Consumer Price Index." Besides a "basic monthly wage and the two annual extra payments that are common in Spain (13th and 14th month pay), other components of players' salaries can include signing-on fees, appearance bonuses, loyalty bonuses and image rights." The basic monthly wage for La Liga professionals is €5,375 ($6,800), and this "also applies to the two extra payments noted above," giving a basic total of at least €75,250 ($95,000) a year. The shortfall between this figure and the minimum annual salary of €129,000 "can be made up for through signing-on fees and other bonuses, which clubs and players are free to negotiate on their own terms" (MARCA, 10/9).
