Fernando Alonso Misses Deadline To Register Cycling Team With UCI For 2015

The Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) has confirmed that Ferrari F1 driver Fernando Alonso's cycling team has "not applied" for a World Tour license for next year, according to Tom Cary of the London TELEGRAPH. The UCI has released a list of teams who have "applied for either top-tier World Tour or second-division" Pro Continental licenses for '15 and the Spanish F1 driver's "eagerly-anticipated, much-hyped team" was not on it. The UCI added that it had engaged in "very cordial and productive discussions" with the Ferrari driver and his representatives. The UCI said, "Whilst this has not led to a team for 2015, we thank Fernando Alonso for his interest and engagement and look forward to continuing discussions with him and/or his advisers if they wish to pursue that interest further." There is a "very small possibility that the Fernando Alonso Cycling Team could line up next year but that he and his new partners at sports investment firm NOVO are now focusing primarily on 2016" (TELEGRAPH, 10/8).
