NRL Side South Sydney Rabbitohs Receive $8.8M From Government For Center Of Excellence

Australian PM Tony Abbott and Labor MP Anthony Albanese have put politics aside to hand A$10M ($8.8M) to the South Sydney Rabbitohs before Sunday's National Rugby League grand final, according to James Massola of the CANBERRA TIMES. The money will go toward the club's A$22.26M Community and High Performance Centre of Excellence at Heffron Park in Maroubra. It "will help to pay for classrooms, facilities for the community, an administration centre for the football club and a football development department with a gym, aquatic centre, medical facilities, players' lounge and offices." Abbott: "This is an important community project that will provide positive social and economic benefits to the region." Albanese, a Souths fan who has this week worn the club scarf in Parliament, said that "sporting clubs like this were 'critical threads in the fabric that binds our communities'" (CANBERRA TIMES, 10/2).
