Formula E Plans 'Massive Expansion' In London And Beyond Following Inaugural Beijing Race

Formula E, the upstart new race series that runs on electricity, "is planning massive expansion after only a single race," according to Kevin Eason of the LONDON TIMES. The success of the inaugural event in Beijing earlier this month "sparked huge interest with more than 40 cities interested in hosting an event." Planners are also close to giving consent for the last round of the championship in London’s Battersea Park next year, "in what promises to be a spectacular finale against the background of the capital’s skyline." From being no more than a concept three years ago, Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said that "plans are gathering pace for a multi-constructor world championship." Formula E "had to start with a single car for each team because no electric single-seater racing cars existed." But, new manufacturers "are expected next year and rules will be loosened to allow them to make their own models." The target "is to improve electric technology to raise speed and endurance." New technology "is also promised that may allow cars to be charged wirelessly while on the move." Agag said, "We see wireless charging as one of the potential elements of the future in Formula E. Definitely battery development – new chemistry will bring the battery capacity to last longer, probably quite soon, maybe three to five years. Then the batteries can last the whole race but we may decide because we like it to keep two cars with twice the amount of power and go much faster" (LONDON TIMES, 9/30).
