Ludogorets Owner Discusses Club's Rise Ahead Of Champions League Match Vs. Real Madrid

Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, which will face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, is the property of Owner Kiril Domuschiev, who "bought the club when it was in Bulgaria's second tier," according to Alvaro De La Rosa of AS. Domuschiev "discussed what attracted him to the club and his tenure as owner" in a Q&A. Below is an excerpt:

Q: How did you become the owner of Ludogorets?
Kiril Domuschiev: In Razgrad we have a big pharmaceutical factory where a thousand people work. It has had a team called Ludogorets since '45, but in '99-00, this team -- which had normally played in the third or second tier -- fell into bankruptcy. With this foundation, a group of enthusiasts started everything from zero in '01. The intention was to work with young people and children. I began giving a little bit of money to help them. First €25,000. Later they called me when they were promoted to the second tier because they needed a bigger budget. I asked, "How much?" I was told, "Around €250,000." We decided to help, but with the condition of hiring our financial director and our people to control the investment. In '10-11, we made the first division, and there, my brother and I, along with our people, looked at what was necessary. We organized things with very good professionals. And you know the story... Three years we have won the Bulgarian league. The first year we won the triple and we did so again last season.

Q: What is your secret?
Domuschiev: Work, organization. We have a budget of €6 million, less than the other teams in Europe. Levski and CSKA have something similar. In Bulgaria there is a serious crisis and not many people invest. The budget was increased as the team grew (AS, 9/30).
