Qatar Pulls Out Of Women's Basketball Competition Over Headscarf Rule

A Qatari official said that the country has "pulled out of the women’s basketball competition at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea," after it was "denied permission to wear the Islamic headscarf," according to REUTERS. The Qatari players "had been asked to remove the hijab before their group game against Mongolia on Wednesday but refused, leaving the organisers no option but to declare a forfeit." With no sign the rule "would be relaxed before their next match against Nepal, Qatar decided not to go ahead with their remaining games at the 17th Asiad, which is being run under the slogan: Diversity Shines Here." Competition at the Asian Games "is conducted under the regulations of the sports’ international governing bodies, meaning athletes in other sports are free to wear the hijab" (REUTERS, 9/25). The AFP reported FIBA's ban on headwear in int'l competition "is motivated by safety but it has raised hackles at Asia's Olympics, which includes several Muslim nations." Qatari player Rafaa Morgan Mohammed said, "It's an insult to us, they don't respect religion." Olympic Council of Asia Dir General Husain Al-Musallam: "Every athlete has the right to represent their country's flag without discrimination" (AFP, 9/25).
