Liverpool could have almost £7M ($11.5M) of Champions League prize money
withheld pending a UEFA inquiry into a "possible breach of Financial Fair
Play regulations," according to Gabriele Marcotti for the LONDON TIMES. The payment, expected next month, "may not be forthcoming"
if the club is referred to UEFA's Club Financial Control Body. Along with teams such as Monaco, Roma and Inter Milan, "Liverpool's absence
from either the Champions League or the Europa League last season" meant it was not asked to submit its accounts for '11-12 and '12-13 to UEFA's CFCB. Now, however, it is "subject to last season's FFP
regulations." UEFA Head of Club Licensing & FFP Andrea Traverso said, "As soon as a club qualifies, it enters the scope of
Financial Fair Play." UEFA has not confirmed which clubs will be deemed "at risk." Traverso,
however, confirmed that "some clubs have shown 'indicators of financial
issues.'" Given Liverpool's losses, it appears plausible that it "could be
among them and be referred to the CFCB," where it would have to submit
additional detailed information and argue its case. Last season, 76 clubs
were found to be "at risk" but, "ultimately, only nine were sanctioned" (LONDON TIMES, 9/23).
