Spainish Pay-TV Providers Charge Highest Rates In Europe For Sports, Study Finds

Source: EL CONFIDENCIAL
A study by Comparaiso.es found that sports fans in Spain "pay more to watch their favorite teams on pay-TV channels than in any other European country," according to Ana Isabel M. Cordobés of EL CONFIDENCIAL. The report, titled "II Estudio Deportes TV & Internet," details prices for "every TV operator" in six European countries: Spain, Germany, the U.K., France, Portugal and Italy. In Spain, a complete package to see all sports (Canal+ and Canal + Liga) costs from €35.45 ($45.76) for Movistar to €51.21 ($66.10) -- per month -- for ONO and Canal+. Subscribers in Spain to Canal + Liga "who want to see all the games of both Real Madrid and Barcelona have to pay extra to see certain matches." By country, Italy "offers the lowest prices." Offers from Sky Calcio and Sky Sport cost between €24 ($31) and €28 ($36) per month. In only three countries -- Spain, the U.K. and France -- "it is legal to watch football online without paying extra." To watch sports online, "the highest price is in the U.K.," where it costs €54.92 ($70.89) per month, compared to €18 ($23) in Spain and €12 ($15) in France. France is the only country "where it is possible to watch games in high definition online" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 9/18). The EP reported Comparaiso's study's showed that the average monthly cost in Spain is €52.1 ($67.3). The study "examined the two ways to watch sports in Spain:" via the Internet and TV. The data "was acquired through phone surveys and information taken from broadcasters' websites in September." Comparaiso Country Manager Alicia Navas said, "Following sports, and especially football, in Spain is becoming a true luxury to which many thousands do not have access" (EP, 9/17).
