Irish Cricket Handed Seven-Figure Cash Boost By Country's Richest Man

Irish cricket "has been handed a seven-figure cash boost by signing a 10-year sponsorship deal with a group of companies owned by Ireland's richest man, Indian-born Pallonji Mistry," according to the BBC. The deal, believed to be in the region of £2M ($3M), "will see the country's cricket academy being renamed the Shapoorji Pallonji Cricket Ireland Academy." Shapoorji Pallonji "is the name of the billionaire's group of companies." In addition to holding the naming rights to the Cricket Ireland Academy, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group "will also become an official partner to Cricket Ireland" (BBC, 9/17). In Dublin, Emmet Riordan wrote discussing the reasons behind the Mistry family’s first investment in Ireland, Mistry said in a video message played at Wednesday’s launch at Trinity College that "the company’s policy of nurturing young indigenous talent and the Mistry family’s links to Ireland were key." The 10-year deal is made up of an initial lump sum and will make the investment worth between €2M ($2.5M) and €3M ($3.8M), "an incredible investment for an Academy which is in its first year of operation and presently contains 22 players" (IRISH TIMES, 9/18).
