Russian City Novgorod Receives Go-Ahead To Build Stadium For 2018 World Cup

Nizhny Novgorod City Governor Valery Shantsev said that the city "has received the go-ahead to build a new stadium for the 2018 World Cup," according to Paul Nicholson of INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL. Russia's Ministry of Sports "is expected to sign a contract for the build with construction firm Stroitransgaz before the end of October." Nizhny Novgorod "is Russia's fifth largest city with a population of 1,250,615 and is the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast." The stadium development "comes with a package of infrastructure improvements in the city which are expected to be approved in October." These include "a metro station at Strrelka, and a new highway from the airport to the centre of Avtozavodsky district (one of the eight districts in Nizhny Novgorod)." These two projects "will be co-financed with the federal government." The stadium "will be a multi-function sports facility built on an island in the Volga river." The 45,000 capacity stadium development will cover 21.6 hectares (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 9/18).
