Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver urged the ACT government to "bite the bullet" to build a "state of the art stadium if Canberra wants to become a regular fixture on the Wallabies Test calendar," according to Chris Dutton of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. The government's decision to "delay plans to build a new stadium with a roof in Civic" until at least '25 threatens to "leave the capital in international rugby limbo as officials prepare to pay" for the clean-up by insulation service Mr. Fluffy. The ARU met government officials last week and Pulver said that Canberra "would be considered to host the Wallabies" in '17 and beyond, "but added the capital needed a world-class facility." The proposed new undercover stadium on the site of the Civic Pool has been "delayed by at least a decade as the government foots the bill for the Mr Fluffy loose-fill asbestos clean-up." Pulver: "I think a stadium with a roof is a wonderful opportunity for Canberra, if you've got that with a capacity of 30,000 it would be perfect [for Wallabies games]. Frankly, the ACT government needs to bite the bullet. If they want to get serious in this industry [and host Tests], they need to put some world-class facilities down there." The proposed new undercover stadium was initially scheduled to be built by '20 (SMH, 9/16).
