Event Notes: Ticket Sales For Asian Games Dragging As Opening Ceremony Looms

South Korean fans have "snapped up tickets to see high-profile athletes such as Olympic swimming champion Park Tae-hwan at the Asian Games, but overall sales for the multi-sport event are dragging with the opening ceremony just four days away." Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee official Lee Jun-sung said that while fans are "flocking to grab tickets for rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae and badminton star Lee Yong-dae's events," sales for the football competition were just 7% and athletics 8%. Lee said, "We see a huge gap in sales between popular and less-popular sports. Although we are putting all our efforts into selling tickets with lower prices, promotional events, and package deals, it is hard to attract the crowds" (REUTERS, 9/15). ... The Russian government announced on Monday that the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions has been "approved and submitted to the president for signing." The purpose of the convention is to "combat corruption" by promoting "national and international cooperation against manipulation of sports competitions between the public authorities concerned, as well as with organizations involved in sports and in sports betting" (RAPSI, 9/15).
