Oscar Pistorius Found Guilty Of Culpable Homicide In Shooting Death Of Girlfriend

South African Olympic and Paralympic sprinter OSCAR PISTORIUS "faces possible imprisonment after being found guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting of his girlfriend as a drama-filled six-month trial reached a climax on Friday," according to Andrew England of the FINANCIAL TIMES. The 27-year-old "stood and showed little emotion" as Judge THOKOZILE MASIPA read her judgment, which included "finding him guilty of negligently firing a pistol at a busy Johannesburg restaurant in a separate incident." The sentence for culpable homicide, or manslaughter, in South Africa "can range from a fine or suspended sentence to a lengthy prison term." The double-amputee’s uncle, ARNOLD PISTORIUS, "later read out a statement to the media in the court in the capital Pretoria saying the family was 'deeply grateful' to the judge for finding him not guilty of murder" (FT, 9/12). SBS reported Pistorius "will hear his punishment when sentencing begins" on Oct. 13. If Pistorius "is given a short sentence which he would finish serving before the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio," the IOC has said that he would be eligible to compete (SBS, 9/13). The BBC reported a promoter of the Diamond League said that Pistorius "is unlikely to be welcome at future" events. Asked "if he would invite Pistorius," Brussels Diamond League promoter WILFRIED MEERT said, "I don't think so, no." Meert believes his stance on the six-time Paralympic Gold Medalist, who will be sentenced on Oct. 13, "will be shared by other Diamond League promoters." Meert: "Having met quite a lot of them recently, once in a while the conversation turned to the Pistorius case and I don't think there are many around that will accept him again in their meet" (BBC, 9/14).
