Football Notes: FIFA, United Nations Collaborate To Fight Ebola Outbreak In West Africa

FIFA and the United Nations have joined forces in the effort to stop the spread of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The football field at Monrovia's Antoinette Tubman Stadium, donated by FIFA to the Liberia FA, will serve as the site for two urgently needed large-scale Ebola treatment units. After the World Health Organization identified the FIFA football pitch as the most suitable location in terms of effectiveness and safety, FIFA -- one of whose missions is "to build a better future" -- expressed its support for the proposed action to convert the pitch into treatment units (FIFA). ... Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen has reported league rival Celtic's Aleksandar Tonev for "allegedly racially abusing Shay Logan." Aberdeen Manager Derek McInnes reported the "alleged comment to fourth official Crawford Allan in the second half, with the Aberdeen management team also making the Celtic dugout aware of the incident" (STV, 9/14). ... The Irish FA "is planning to bring one of the most glamorous games in world football to the new Windsor Park." The IFA is set to apply to UEFA "to host the European Super Cup final," played between the Champions League and Europa League winners, and IFA President Jim Shaw believes it has "a good chance" of being handed the showpiece occasion at some point in the near future (BELFAST TELEGRAPH, 9/11).
