Ecuadorian Club Execs Seek Meeting With President Correa To Address Financial Woes

Directors of Ecuadorian football clubs, "overwhelmed by a profound economic crisis affecting most of the clubs in the first division," are "seeking an audience" with Ecuador President Rafael Correa, according to the AP. Club execs warned on Wednesday that they "could end the current season." The "majority of the Ecuadorian first division's 12 teams owe their players at least three months' salary." Last week, Deportivo Quito "was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy and recently, players sat out for two matchdays demanding payments." First division side Liga de Loja President Jaime Villavicencio said, "The situation affects all of us. It is not a situation from a week ago, but one that has been dragging on since a long time ago and if we do not take the necessary corrective measures, it could end up ending the football season." He added that "we know Correa is a fan of professional football," and that "he believes Correa will address the problem" (AP, 9/10).
