Event Notes: America's Cup '13 Death Case Closed With No Charges Filed

San Francisco police said on Tuesday that no criminal charges will be filed over the "crash of an America's Cup catamaran in May 2013" that killed British Olympian Andrew "Bart" Simpson. Many people "associated with sailing's marquee regatta had speculated that the crash was caused by a structural failure, which was confirmed for the first time" (AP, 9/11). ... Canberra trainer Nick Olive said that allowing ACT horses to run in the A$300,000 ($275,000) New South Wales Country Championships final (1,400 meters) next April "has prevented a loss of talented horses from the nation's capital." Olive said that "he knew of at least one trainer who had been told by owners they would take their horses elsewhere if Canberra horses could not compete in the Country Championships" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 9/10). ... The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced their bids to host the 2019 Int'l Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. Following their letter of intent, both applicants now have time until Jan. '15 to provide the IIHF with a detailed bid project plan and questionnaire with further information on their bids and venues (IIHF).
