League Notes: South African Rugby Union To Investigate Match-Fixing

The South African Rugby Union said that it has "appointed an independent lawyer to look into allegations of match-fixing in lower-level club games." SARU said on Thursday that "there had been claims of fixing or attempted fixing in club league matches in South Africa's south western region of Boland" (AP, 8/22). ... In the aftermath of jockey V. Kotwal committing suicide last week and "the failed attempt" of Bangalore-based jockey M. Ravi to "end his life last month," members of the Jockeys Association of India decided "not to accept rides" starting Thursday, "which coincides with the start of the Mysore racing season." The jockeys are "adamant to continue their protest till their long-pending demands are met by the Turf Authorities of India" (MUMBAI MIRROR, 8/20). ... World Anti-Doping Agency President Craig Reedie "spoke highly of China's efforts in the fight against doping in sport." He said that the "doping-free record of Chinese athletes in the international arena is a marvel." Reedie: "I think I’m right in saying there hasn’t been international positive test from a Chinese athlete for many years. I think that’s a proud record" (XINHUA, 8/21).
