Hangin' With... America's Golf Cup CEO Lisandro Borges

LISANDRO BORGES is the CEO of the America's Golf Cup, which will hold its inaugural edition from Oct. 21-26 at Buenos Aires' Pilar Golf Club. Borges said he is expecting the tournament to draw approximately 12,000 spectators daily. The America's Golf Cup aims to promote the sport in Latin America and its first edition will feature U.S. golfers Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar as well as Argentina's Ángel Cabrera. After this year, the event, in which 34 countries will participate, will take place in a different Latin American country each year. Both IMG and the PGA Tour Latin America are also involved in the preparations for the tournament, which will be televised globally. In addition to his role with the America's Golf Cup, Borges is the founder of Madero Walk Events, a floating event hall located over a river in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Puerto Madero. Borges spoke with SBD Global about his expectations for the tournament, Pilar Golf Club and his favorite sports other than golf.

On the goal of the America's Golf Cup ...
Lisandro Borges: America’s Golf Cup is a golf tournament created aiming to continue the development of golf in the region. The motivation behind the America's Golf Cup was the fact that a variety of sports like soccer, hockey, volleyball and ping pong have their own America's Cup, but not golf. A sport that is followed and played by millions of people on our continent did not have its own America's Cup. Therefore, I was convinced that this tournament will contribute in large amounts to the development of the sport in each country.

On Woods and Cabrera ...
Borges: When I met Tiger Woods in order to tell him about this tournament, I found myself standing before a simple man, respectful and very polite, who agreed in participating in the event. He granted that it will be a great cause for the sport in America. Later, when he signed his participation, he shot some promotional videos where he explained the importance of the tournament. Not only is he the No. 1 on the course, but outside as well. Tiger Woods and Angel Cabrera will be giving a golf clinic for kids and those who are starting to befriend the sport.

On IMG and the PGA Tour's involvement ...
Borges: With respect to course preparation, we are taking care of this together with IMG (who also organize the Abierto de la Republica Argentina for 10 years now) and the PGA Tour (who will send their team concerning rules). Our relationship with the PGA Tour Latin America is excellent as they are delighted with the creation of this continental tournament and they consider it to be a great step in the development of the sport. Personally, I am grateful and proud that we can count with a prestigious organization like them.

On Buenos Aires and the Pilar Golf Club ...
Borges: Buenos Aires is a wonderful city, with an important airport providing non-stop flights to a number of cities around the world, different tastes and styles with respect to our food, luxury hotels, theaters and great shows. Moreover, it's a city where golf is practiced by many. As an Argentine, it fills me with pride to be able to take over the first edition of the America's Golf Cup in my country. Pilar Golf Club was chosen as the host for this tournament due to its great golf course (where the Abierto de la Republica Argentina was played twice), and it has the best facilities for the development of this international-level tournament.

On how the event can help golf can gain ground in Latin America ...
Borges: The tournament will feature the best golfers from each country and the best golfer in the history of golf, greatly contributing to the development of the sport in the region. When in 2000 the World Cup took place in Argentina (Tiger Woods was present as well) the sport in our country grew. This is why we think that the America's Golf Cup will have great influence in each of the countries in the continent.

On his favorite sports besides golf ...
Borges: Speaking for myself, I am a true sportsman. Besides golf, I also play soccer, tennis, paddle and amongst others enjoy CrossFit. The outdoors and the life connected to sports is my way of life, the values that all the sports represent are very important. When I turn on my TV the first and only thing I watch are sports-related channels.
