Saudi King Calls For 11 New 'World-Class' Stadiums With Minimum Capacity Of 45,000

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build 11 new stadiums -- three more than Qatar is constructing for the 2022 World Cup, according to Courtney Trenwith of ARABIAN BUSINESS. Saudi Arabian King Abdullah on Saturday ordered the stadia be "world-class," each with a "capacity for 45,000 spectators." The "kingdom already has 23 stadiums" (ARABIAN BUSINESS, 6/22). AL ARABIYA NEWS reported the stadiums were "ordered to meet the highest international standards as is the case with Al-Jawhara stadium that opened its doors last May in King Abdullah Sports City in the coastal city of Jeddah." The new stadiums will be built in the provinces of Madinah, Al-Qassim, Eastern Province, Asir, Tabuk, Hail, Northern Border Region, Jazan, Najran, Baha and Al-Jouf (AL ARABIYA NEWS, 6/22).
