Former F1 Driver Michael Schumacher No Longer In A Coma, Leaves French Hospital

Seven-time F1 world champion MICHAEL SCHUMACHER "is no longer in a coma and has left a French hospital where he had been receiving treatment since a skiing accident in December," according to the AP. Schumacher's Manager, SABINE KEHM, said that he left the hospital in Grenoble "to continue his long phase of rehabilitation." She did not say "when he was released, where the seven-time F1 champion was taken or give any further details of his condition." A Swiss hospital told the AFP that Schumacher "had been transferred there" (AP, 6/16). Kehm: "His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months." A University Hopsital of Lausanne spokesperson "declined to say what unit Schumacher, who lives with his family in a town between Lausanne and Geneva, was being treated in, citing medical secrecy and family privacy" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 6/16). FOX SPORTS reported within minutes of word that Schumacher "was out of his coma, an outpouring of well-wishes shared their joy at the news on social media." After just over an hour, fans and friends from across the globe "had posted over 112,000 tweets, the name ‘Michael Schumacher’ trending world wide." Among them was his old team Mercedes. The team tweeted, "Encouraging news on Michael’s condition this morning. We couldn’t ask for a better start to the week. #KeepFightingMichael" (FOX SPORTS, 6/16).
