Event Notes: Arsenal Names Valencia, Monaco, Benfica As Emirates Cup Participants

Arsenal confirmed that La Liga side Valencia, Ligue 1 side Monaco and Portuguese side Benfica will visit London for August's preseason Emirates Cup tournament. The "seventh staging of the competition" will be held on Aug. 2-3 ahead of the '14-15 campaign. Arsenal will face Benfica in "Saturday's second game and bring the curtain down on the event by facing Manager Arsene Wenger's former club Monaco on Sunday" (SKY SPORTS, 5/2). ... The European Athletics Council awarded the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships to Belgrade, Serbia and the 2016 European Athletics Youth Championships to Tbilisi, Georgia on Saturday. The cities of Belgrade, Istanbul and Toruń, Poland presented bids for the '17 event, with Belgrade winning the bid -- Kombank Arena was named the venue (European Athletics). ... Argentine first division side River Plate's Superclásico match in Mexico has been moved from Cancun to Mexico City's Estadio Azteca. The match will take place on May 31, with the "change coming due to demands from fans in Mexico's capital" (OLE, 5/4).
