Asian Football Confederation President Told By FIFA VP To Spend Less Energy On Politics

Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has been told by FIFA VP Prince Ali bin Al Hussein to "spend less time on politics and more on developing the sport," according to Brian Homewood of REUTERS. Al Hussein, elected as Asia's FIFA VP in '11, made the comments as he criticized a "campaign for his position on the executive committee to be automatically handed to the AFC president, starting from next year." Al Hussein said in a letter to the Asian football community, "It is unfortunate that the direction taken by the AFC President and other AFC officials is one driven purely by politics instead of focusing our energies and valuable time on improving the game in Asia." Al Hussein added that the AFC leadership should instead address "the myriad challenges that AFC faces in marketing, grassroots football, women's football, transparency and accountability and the list goes on" (REUTERS, 4/16).
