Uruguayan Football Match Suspended Due To Government-Imposed Police Absence

The Executive Table of the Uruguayan first division, the body responsible for choosing match venues, "on Sunday reached a majority decision to suspend a match between Miramar Misiones and Peñarol," according to EL OBSERVADOR. Executive Table President Carlos Andrealo said, "We have made this verbal decision, which later will be confirmed in writing, by the players' association and the league's fundraising staff (AFRAUF). The game will not be held Sunday because there will be no police presence at the stadium." Andrealo added, "Tomorrow (Monday) we will meet to evaluate all of this because it creates a situation of uncertainty for the future because if the situation stays the same and the associations hold their positions, it will not be possible to hold matches at at Central Park Stadium" (EL OBSERVADOR, 3/30). EMOL reported the suspension of the Miramar-Peñarol match followed Uruguay President José Mujica's "decision on Thursday to withdraw the police presence at both of Montevideo's principal stadiums: Central Park and Centenario Stadium." Mujica's decision followed "the violent incidents that occurred at a Copa Libertadores match on Wednesday between Uruguayan side Nacional and Argentine club Newell's Old Boys." Uruguay's Interior Ministry said that during that game, "a fight between Nacional fans and police" left "13 officers hurt and 38 people arrested" (EMOL, 3/30).
