FIFA Plans 22% Hike In Prize Money Awarded At 2018 Russia World Cup

FIFA has "paved the way for a big increase in prize money" at the 2018 Russia World Cup, according to David Owen of ISLAND SPORTS NETWORK. Budget plans for '15-18, included in FIFA's new '13 financial report, include a total of $582M for "finalist payments" at the World Cup, which "is responsible for the vast majority of FIFA's revenue." This would be more than $100M up on the $476M to be paid to national teams at this year's Brazil World Cup. The planned 22% increase appears to leave open the possibility of '18 producing the first $50M World Cup winner (ISN, 3/26).
