  • German Basketball Federation Interested In Hosting EuroBasket 2015

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) "wants to host EuroBasket 2015 after Ukraine has given up the hosting rights for next year's European championship," according to SPORT1. DBB General Secretary Wolfgang Brenscheidt said, "We've been approached, and will throw our hat in the ring." However, Brenscheidt said that the DBB "does not want to host the whole tournament but only part of it." FIBA Europe said that "it has not yet received a request from Ukraine to move the tournament." Therefore, a switch of the host country is currently "pure speculation." Brenscheidt also said that between "10 to 12 countries" have announced their interest in hosting the event (SPORT1, 3/19).

  • Exhibition Game Between MLB's L.A. Dodgers, Team Australia Draws Sparse Crowd In Sydney

A general view of the crowd for Thursday's exhibition game at the SCG. Sellouts are expected this weekend.

MLB's "historic" two-game series between the L.A. Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks "is all but sold out," but Thursday night's warm-up between the Dodgers and Team Australia "was a tougher sell," according to Adrian Proszenko of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. It is not just the National Rugby League "struggling to attract crowds." The bays of empty seats "may have suggested that Sydneysiders, the fickelest of fans, shared the sentiments" of Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke, who said he held ‘‘absolutely zero excitement’’ about the initiative. The turnout meant "those wanting to tick eating a metre-long hot dog" -- apparently A$40 ($36M) "well spent" -- off the bucket list "didn’t need to queue long to do so" (SMH, 3/21). MLB's presence in Sydney continues to generate plenty of interest from the media. The Sydney Daily Telegraph and Sydney Morning Herald both wrote detailed game stories from Thursday's exhibition game. The Sydney Morning Herald also wrote a feature story on Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu, and his relationship with Australia's 44-year-old pitcher Dae-sung Koo, who taught Ryu how to throw a changeup (SBD Global).

  • Sao Paulo Warned To Take Steps To Avoid World Cup Water Shortage

The World Water Council is warning Sao Paulo "to take emergency measures to conserve water as the region reels from a record drought or risk supply shortages during the World Cup," according to Christiana Sciaudone of BLOOMBERG. Benedito Braga, president of Sabesp, Brazil’s largest water utility, said in Sao Paulo that the group should implement “heavy fines” for excessive use to help avoid any "shortfalls during the football championship." The city "is hosting the inaugural game and five other matches of the World Cup" that runs from June 12-July 13. The drought has shrunken water levels in Cantareira’s basin, "which supplies almost half of the 20 million residents of metropolitan Sao Paulo," to 14.7% of capacity, the lowest since at least '82. Braga said, "The solution is to use water strictly for hygiene and health only and not for washing cars or sidewalks -- that’s the only way out that we have" (BLOOMBERG, 3/19).
