Newly Elected ICC Chair N. Srinivasan Expected To Fill Role Despite Controversy

New Int'l Cricket Council Chair N. Srinivasan was expected Tuesday to defy calls to step down as Board of Control for Cricket in India president "despite a damning court inquiry that implicated a relative in illegal betting," according to the AFP. After an extensive investigation, a Supreme Court panel said son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan "was guilty of illegal betting in the Indian Premier League" and allegations of match-fixing against him should be further probed. Former BCCI President A.C. Muthiah said that Srinivasan’s role in the sport’s administration "was untenable following the findings." Muthiah: "It has definitely weakened Srinivasan’s position. He has to recuse himself according to corporate principles because it is a clear case of conflict of interest." But Srinivasan, who successfully weathered last year’s betting and fixing IPL scandals, "was expected to brush aside the calls to quit the BCCI, with supporters saying he has not been accused of wrongdoing." A senior BCCI member said, “I can’t see Srinivasan stepping down just because of the report since he himself has not been found guilty of anything" (AFP, 2/11).

BAD TIMING: In New Delhi, Sanjjeev K. Samyal wrote the findings "could not have come at a worse time" for Srinivasan. On the verge of becoming the undisputed king of world cricket, having been anointed the chairman of the ICC’s board, Srinivasan’s image "has taken a beating." However, "his authority in the BCCI remains unshakeable, and hence his position in the ICC." There "is no doubt that the Mudgal committee has given a very strong issue to Srinivasan’s opponents." With the findings against Meiyappan and his role with Chennai Super Kings established, "clause number 11.3c of the IPL rulebook can easily be invoked and a strong case against the franchise can be made" (HINDUSTAN TIMES, 2/11). Also in New Delhi, Sai Prasad Mohapatra wrote Mudgal "stated in his report how the panel nailed Meiyappan’s culpability." The panel members searched through the records of Delhi and Mumbai Police and invited various stakeholders -- BCCI officials, ex-board presidents, players, investigating agencies and cricket correspondents -- "to depose before them." It found that "Meiyappan would be with the team during practice sessions, team meetings," at the auction table, in the dugout and at IPL owners’ meetings. He traveled with the team, participated in the owners’ workshop "representing himself to be the owner of CSK and held out to the world at large as the team principal/ team owner of CSK" (HINDUSTAN TIMES, 2/11).

ANTI-FRAUD BILL: The PTI reported asserting that the indictment of corruption in strengthened the case for bringing cricket within the ambit of an anti-fraud bill, Sports Minister on Tuesday said that "the legislation is necessary to stop such malpractices." The bill "seeks to address issues such as match-fixing, deliberate under-performance and leaking of sensitive information" (PTI, 2/11). The PTI also reported Srinivasan said that "his prime focus during his tenure would be to make all the three formats of the game equally important." Srinivasan: "For me, all three formats are equally important. The endeavor is to look after all three formats as it is necessary for the health and development of the game." Srinivasan said that "the member nations will stand to gain more out of the new arrangement." Srinivasan: "I am very happy that new resolution will pave the way for bringing in stability in world cricket. The new resolution was necessary for better financial health of the cricketing nations. It will generate more income for member nations. This restructuring was necessary. We needed to redefine FTP [Future Tours and Programme] to make it more vibrant" (PTI, 2/11).

Justice Mudgal also stated in his report how the panel nailed Meiyappan’s culpability. The panel members searched through the records of Delhi and Mumbai Police and invited various stakeholders — BCCI officials, ex-board presidents, players, investigating agencies and cricket correspondents — to depose before them.

The findings of the Justice Mukul Mudgal probe committee couldn’t have come at a worse time for N Srinivasan. Having just led the crusade to change the functioning of world cricket ensuring more power and revenue for India, England and Australia, the focus is on the BCCI for wrong reasons.

On the verge of becoming the undisputed king of world cricket, having been anointed the chairman of the ICC’s board, Srinivasan’s image has taken a beating. However, his authority in the BCCI remains unshakeable, and hence his position in the ICC.

Who’ll bell the cat?

There is no doubt that the Mudgal committee has given a very strong issue to Srinivasan’s opponents. With the findings against his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and his role with CSK established, clause number 11.3c of the IPL rulebook can easily be invoked and a strong case against the franchise can be made. But the point is who will bell the cat?
