LFP, Spanish Government Launch Anti-Piracy Campaign, Promise Consequences

Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President Miguel Cardenal announced on Monday that along with the Spanish government, the CSD is working to reform the law to fight piracy by incorporating "a specific article addressing suspected cases," according to the EFE. Cardenal made the announcement during the Spanish Football League's (LFP) presentation of an anti-piracy campaign called "When you pirate football you damage your team," which is looking to make the population aware that "it is illegal to view a product that has not been paid for." Cardenal: "A Penal Code reform is being developed. It is considering making penalties more severe and adjusting sentences according to what happens. ... With this reform we hope to improve on the shortage of current piracy regulations." LFP President Javier Tebas highlighted "the tremendous damage that piracy does to football." Tebas: "In England, there are 11 million pay-TV subscribers and in Spain there are just more than 3 million, the same as in Portugal. This has to be corrected. We have to pay our professionals and we have to raise that money from what fans watch, because if this remains the way it is, we will continue to be the poorest football league in Europe" (EFE, 2/10).
