Football Notes: Shanghai Shenhua Fans Protest Greenland Name Change

Supporters of Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua "intend to protest against the club’s new identity following new owner Greenland real estate’s decision to rename the club to 'Shanghai Greenland FC, Shanghai Greenland Shenhua team.'" Hundreds of fans "reacted angrily to the announcement, cursing Greenland and accusing the corporation of abandoning 20 years of history as the CSL team alongside Beijing Guoan to have retained its original title in some form" (WILD EAST FOOTBALL, 2/8). ... Egypt "has ordered retrials for all 64 defendants" accused in the Feb. '12 Port Said stadium riot, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram. Nine appeals from defendants "were also rejected." The court's decision on Thursday "means that 21 people sentenced to death -- as well as 28 people found not guilty -- for their involvement in the deadly football violence that killed 74 people will be retried." Seventy-three people in total "were accused for their roles in the riots, including policeman and sports officials" (DW, 2/6). ... The Caribbean Football Union has joined with CONCACAF in implementing various integrity measures to protect the sport and enshrine the statutes of fair play (CFU). ... A worker was "killed in an accident outside the World Cup stadium in the Brazilian jungle city of Manaus." Organizers in charge of the "city's preparations said the worker died while dismantling a crane that was used to install the roof of the Arena da Amazonia."
